For my practicum I worked with Dustin as a sign operator for the Men’s Basketball nationals. We mainly worked with Mr Bourne and SAIT athletics. Myself and Dustin were putting up headshots of the various players, ads and some video of the mascot doing cheers. It really brought together a lot of what we were learning in the course in regards to production and design. It also brought together the work we did in saving for devices as that was what we were mainly doing saving content for a device. What were were doing was making displays for the sign that played during the nationals(mainly ads) however Dustin made head shots that were played whenever a player scored. RTBN was also working on displays for the game however they were mainly videotaping the game and streaming it for people to be able to watch it online. They did more than just take raw feed and send it online. They did replays, put up the score and put up some graphics of their own (like the waving flag and what next game). The flag was put up when the game sang the national anthem. For the most part Dustin and I did our thing and RTBN did theirs however there was some collaboration as whenever we put up a green screen whatever they sent online could be viewed through the screen in the gym. RTBN’s stuff was on the screen whenever the game was in play and no one scored recently.
For what we were designing to work with the sign we had to follow specific guidelines. Images had to be in the web/device file formats(gif, jpeg, png) and videos had to be uncompressed avi. At first I thought the mov would work with the sign however I found out when I tried to import my videos that it wouldn’t. I also found out working with the videos that After Effects like to keep the proportions for the images close to the proportions that the video was taken in which was not a size ratio that would work for the screen we were working with, clicking off one default setting takes care of that problem. because of those two problems I ended up exporting the videos three times to get them the right size and format.
Images weren’t as big of a problem I’m more used to dealing with images and putting them online.

here is one that showed when ever the games began after that image had being shown for long enough we would either cut to a green screen if the game was starting with the national anthem(the RTBN class would put up a waving flag) or we would cycle though headshots of the players that were in the game. the headshots were Dustin’s responsibility and he made them into a work of art even though a lot of the pictures were not flattering(not the fault of whoever took them).

this was a screen that showed some of the sponsors we had a few other sponsors that were given the day before the first game.

Some of those ads were in the wrong orientation to be put on the screen so I had to edit the ads to work on the screen.like the one you see below.

We also made four still images into an animation by loading these four pictures into one file in Venus 1500 and put a five second duration on them. which was a good way to make interactive content without any interactive content.

Because of where the sign was we couldn’t always see when the screens needed to be switched or which player scored we ended up having one of us go out in the gym with a two-way radio. All and all it was a very good experience and it would be fun to something of that nature in the future
